The man has skills

American GodsWhilst reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman at lunch today, I was called out by another worker-drone who had apparently just finished it and was working his way through Neverwhere by the same (one of my favorite books around, incidentally).  This makes 5 or so times now that I’ve had conversations begin as a consequence of Gaiman’s novels; moreso than with any other author.  It seems that he’s achieved the somewhat specific seeming level of notoriety in which his name is recognizable enough that people comment on it, but obscure enough not to be one of those books that every 3rd person is reading at the bus stop.  I enjoy these conversations, because I don’t often have conversations with strangers that I’m actually interested in, but moreso because it’s rare to have conversations that emphatically advocate a book without one party or the other being put-upon.

The bibliophile theme that’s emerging is purely accidental, by the by.
