Book Learnin’

I ran across an interesting article on a small blog called inklings (via mgk) about writing in the margins of books; something for which I’ve been chastised more than once.  Aside from contributing the term ‘marginalia,’ which is nearly but not quite too twee for me to accept it into my personal slang, the article posits that taking notes in books is significantly less preferable than taking notes elsewhere.  I’ll let you follow the link for more of the author’s thoughts on the issue.

To me, though, convenience is king. I enjoy writing in margins and between lines as a way of personalizing texts, and I can’t imagine giving up on being able to go back to a book 5 or 10 years after I first read it, and seeing how my thoughts on it then contrast with my thoughts now.

If I were better at this, there’d be a picture here of my copy of The Choice by Brzezinsk, which I’ve flagged and annotated to bits.
